Cross-country (XC)

2023-2024 season

There are two types of cross country events on offer: the North District Cross Country League (NDCCL) and the Scottish Athletics Championship events (the Champs).

The NDCCL events are free to enter and not very formal so they are great taster sessions if you’ve never done a cross country before. They aren’t more difficult than our trail runs, e.g., the  Beach & Bark trail run (Castletown to Dunnet). The routes are mostly on forest tracks and sometimes tarmac. Although each event in a race in itself, it also forms part of a league and your points tally up over the season so you can establish a friendly rivalry with other runners roughly your pace. There is also a team league and that’s really good fun trying to get NHH up the table.

NDCCL fixtures for the 2023-2024 season are as follows:

  • 28 Oct – Lochaber
  • 18 Nov – Ross County
  • 9   Dec – Forres
  • 20 Jan – Peterhead
  • 11 Feb – Nairn
For more information, the NDCCL website can be accessed here

The Champs are organised through Scottish Athletics and are championship events. They are a bit more formal than the NDCCL races and you have to be a member of Scottish Athletics to enter (David Spencer for membership application details). There is an entrance fee, but this is relatively inexpensive. The courses are usually a little bit easier than the NDCCL – more grass and less trail. A popular race format is the relays, which we don’t normally get the opportunity to do as we’re not a track athletics club.

The Champs fixtures for 2023-2024 are as follows:

  • 7  Oct – North Relays (Nairn)
  • 2  Dec – North District Champs (Gordonstoun)
  • 11 Feb – Masters (Forres)
  • 24 Feb – National Champs (Falkirk)
