Race Report

Only 14 hardy runners took part in what is the hardest run of the winter trail series - 11.95 miles (over 10 miles of climb!!!) with over 1700ft of ascent and a tricky steep descent to the finish.

The weather was near perfect for the challenge that lay ahead, overcast, damp, a bit breezy (got stronger the higher we got!) and a balmy 5 degrees.

The Brora guys had the course well marked out with only one detour noted - Euan decided to add an extra mile on just for fun!

Starting off with a winding climb through the bottom section of the mountain bike trail over to the backies car park then onto 3 miles of a slow constant climb up to the turn onto the windmill road. Sweets on offer at the top - much appreciated then a slight downhill section, just enough to give the legs a rest and ready themselves for the climb to the 'Duke'.

More winding cycle tracks with such endearing names as the 'Lactic Ladder' then the 'Lang Way Round' to the top. Legs started to buckle a bit here so the half mars bar in my back pocket and a large scoop from a welcoming stream got them going again. Up to the top where the wind got stronger then to the downhill section which was a welcome sight.

The first section of downhill requires a lot of concentration where foot placement is essential and with the added extra of mud and exposed rocks it was especially tricky. Under the pass with a less technical downhill, but still tricky section to the main track. Over the track and into the forest then out of the forest for a downhill road run to the finish.

Was greeted with the Brora girls handing out water and making the coffee for the runners, none of this self-service nonsense!! Lots of yummy sandwiches and homebakes washed down with coffee and post run tales of wrong turns (Euan) and tumbles (Jack).

All in all a great run, well organised, lovely grub and a very satisfying way to spend a Sunday morning. See you all at Loch More.
