Report 3 - Week beginning 18/01/10

With the improved weather I've managed to get back on track this week.

On Monday evening I returned to the torture class (Body Conditioning) at my local gym. I was pretty tired after my long run on Sunday but jogged the mile there. I did about 80% of what everyone else did during the class but eased off on some things as I just seem to suffer after doing it! I'm afraid I don't really believe in the phrase 'no pain, no gain' I'm more a 'moderation in everything' type of girl! I cadged a lift home from a mate as well... well, she DID offer!

This week I rested on Tuesday and went to my running club on Wednesday. I was feeling much better and my group ran a 6 mile 'tempo' run. We did a mile warm up at 8.5 min mile pace, then 4 miles at 7.75 min mile pace followed by a mile warm down at 9 min mile pace. I like Wednesdays as its chip butties and beer after the run in the pub!

Thursday evening I met up with Portia and we did a hilly 5 miles. We ran up each hill hard and slowed down on the flat and downhills. I don't think our route is as hilly as the 'Friday Night Run' in Thurso though but I think we were working quite hard.

Saturday was long run day. Portia and I did 10 miles. We started with a lap around the woods in Markeaton Park then ran about 2.5 miles out of Derby to Allestree Park where we met up with Graham, another club runner. Graham is a fell runner in his mid 60's - he is a real inspiration as he still competes around the Peak District with me in the summer and always beats me! He has an incredible turn of speed downhill and absolutely no fear! I can get up a hill quicker than him but he always comes flying past laughing on the downhill! We did a very muddy 3 miles in the park - it was lovely, great views and there were lambs in the fields....

Sunday was the cross country at Holme Pierpoint in Nottingham. I've never been before - it is the National Water Sports Centre and what a great facility. A huge Olympic sized rowing lake was full of rowers out for their Sunday morning sessions, there were dingy sailors as well. Cycling clubs were out cycling round the lake and runners out for their Sunday long runs. The white water area is good as well where the kayakers train and regular triathlons are held there as well. It was only a 3 mile course, very muddy but great fun. I was a little tired after Saturday's long run but I think our Lady Vet Team was placed first and I think the Mens team placed as well so it was a good day. We had 7 ladies running and 5 men and went off to the pub afterwards absolutely covered in mud!

Overall - a good week.
