Report 14 (retired) - Week beginning 05/04/10

I had my leg re-xrayed last Wednesday and it is confirmed as a stress fracture to my fibula.

You can now see the new bone growth where it has begun to heal. It is caused by my running gait. As I've got older I pronate more as I also suffer from bunions (not only on the joint under my big toe but also on the joint under my little toe - both feet! This is a congenital abnormality which I've always had, it runs in my family.

Bunions make you pronate more than normal and as you age they get worse. So over the past year the muscle attachments to my fibula have been pulling more and more on the bone.

The fibula is a non weight bearing bone which is why it doesn't hurt to walk on. All the fibula does is support the muscle and ligament attachments to the lower leg. Eventually the bone has cracked due to the excessive pulling on it as my muscles and ligaments are stronger than the bone.

Anyway, I know this happened about 6 weeks ago. I've not run since and it is healing well. What I need to do now is see a podiatrist to get my gait analysed and have some orthotics made to make my feet fall properly again.

I can run again in 4 weeks and I've started cycling in the meantime and am watching what I eat. Initially I put on 5lbs (I was sulking!!) but its gone again now.

I won't be doing the Mey 10k though which is a big disappointment but at least I know I'll be right again soon.

Did you see in the news last week - Camilla Parker Bowles has also fractured her fibula - I'm in good company!! Tee
