Report 12 - Week beginning 22/03/10
Well, it's been a frustrating week! I visited my Physio last Monday to get a diagnosis on my bad leg. She took one look at it and said 'erm..... I think that's broken'. She didn't want to touch it without me having an x-ray first so off I went to the local A & E Department.
It's very odd.....
I have no pain on walking (though it does have a dull ache to it) and a full range of movement in the ankle, again with no pain. The ankle is a bit weak but not totally useless. There is pain on the fibula bone about an inch above the ankle - and if this area is pressed I hit the roof, it's a '10'!
Around the ankle is very swollen (I guess any fluid would drain down away from the injury) and the painful area is bit hot - which suggests a fracture - or as the Physio suggested - a snake bite!! (We'll ignore the fact that I've been walking round on it for 3 weeks!)

The x-ray was apparently difficult to diagnose. The painful area 'might or might not' be a stress fracture! Very helpful! I really don't know what I've done - I thought stress fractures take months to come on, are an overuse injury and are very painful in the preceding period up to the bone fracturing. I have had no pain in that leg up until after my final long run. I haven't twisted my ankle or slipped or banged it in anyway. So I'm pretty confused.
Anyway, I'm back at the Physio today.
I'm currently unable to cycle, swim, walk (other than to and back from work) or anything really so I'm thinking of taking up knitting (surely that's safe!). I'm lucky in that I have BUPA coverage from work so should be able to get a full diagnosis including a soft tissue scan and maybe a bone density scan might be a good idea.
I'm hoping that the ligament (peroneuous longus) I initially thought was the culprit is still the most likely suspect. Stress fractures (especially for no apparent reason) are something I don't really want to contemplate but I really don't know.
In the meantime, all the Engineers from work have entered the Robin Hood Half Marathon in September. They all smoke like chimneys and have never run further than to the bar for last orders but are currently avidly reading back copies of Runners World and discussing Training Plans...... Well, I had to enter didn't I? Surely by September I'll be back to normal and be able to give them a run for their money!
